Online Security

Maintaining the security of your personal and account information is important to us. Our ability to do this relies on both our ability to offer banking services to you in a secure manner as well as your responsibility in keeping any access codes, passwords, or PINs secure. We employ a number of measures, described below, to assist us in offering our online banking services in a secure manner.

Protecting Your Data

Confidential information or highly sensitive data is stored securely and protected with stringent access controls. The following are two common ways to secure sensitive data. Both methods are incorporated into our system:

  1. We use encryption to secure your information when it is traveling over the Internet. Encryption technology disguises information to prevent it from being read by unauthorized individuals and enhances confidentiality by restricting information access to only intended users. Encryption-based methods can also be used to verify message authenticity and accuracy. Information is encrypted and decrypted with a cipher (special code) and key using computer hardware or software. The secrecy of the key and the complexity of the cipher are crucial for the success of encryption controls. When you initiate an Online Banking session with Pacific Rim Bank, our web server and your browser will communicate using the Secured Socket Layer (SSL) protocol using 128-bit encryption keys.

  2. We use firewalls and other network equipment to prevent unauthorized access to your information. Firewalls are physical devices, software programs, or both enhancing security by monitoring and limiting access to computer facilities. They create a security barrier between two or more networks to protect Pacific Rim Bank’s computer system from unauthorized entry. Filtering routers are incorporated into the firewall system to screen data traffic and direct messages to certain locations.

Protecting Access to Your Account

You must privately maintain a combination of a Login ID and Password to be able to access your Pacific Rim Bank Online account. While your initial password is pre-assigned, you will be forced to change your password upon your first login to the system and before any transactions can be requested. This procedure forces you to establish a uniquely private password. It is your responsibility to keep this password secret. In case you forget your password, or if it is ever lost or stolen, you can reset a default password using a secure reset process on Pacific Rim Bank Online, or a customer service representative can reset your password for you once your identity has been confirmed.

Additionally, if an unauthorized person attempts to gain access to your account by guessing your login ID or password, our Online Banking system will disable your account on the third incorrect attempt, thus securing your account from any further unauthorized access attempts. If you accidentally activate this security feature by unintentionally mis-keying your password three times (a common mistake is having the CAPS LOCK key on while typing your password), you can reset a default password using a secure reset process on Pacific Rim Bank Online, or a customer service representative can reset your password for you once your identity has been confirmed.

To further protect you, a timeout feature is used. This feature automatically logs you out of your current financial service session after a 10-minute period of inactivity on our site. You will receive a warning before being logged out of the site.

Your Responsibilites

Even with the above security measures in place, there are certain items that are beyond our control that are your responsibility:

  1. Input errors
  2. Negligent handling or sharing of login IDs, passwords, PINs, or other access codes
  3. Failure to properly log out of an online banking session and/or leaving the computer unattended while in an online banking session
  4. Failure to promptly report known incidents of password/PINs thefts or incidents of unauthorized access to online banking accounts.

Please strongly consider the following practices to maintain the security of your online banking information:

  1. Keep your Pacific Rim Bank Online login ID and password secret. Make sure no one is watching you as you log in to your account.
  2. Change your Pacific Rim Bank Online password frequently.
  3. Always access Pacific Rim Bank Online from a web browser that supports 128-bit encryption. If you are unsure of your web browser’s capabilities, use the “Test Browser” link on the Pacific Rim Bank Online login page to test your browser’s encryption abilities.
  4. Do not leave your computer unattended while signed on to Pacific Rim Bank Online. If you will be leaving your computer, remember to log off of Pacific Rim Bank Online.
  5. Take all possible precautions to keep your computer clean and free from viruses or spyware that could be used to capture your keystrokes or access sensitive information on your hard drive.
  6. Monitor your account and reconcile transactions on a timely basis. Report any suspicious transactions to a customer service representative at Pacific Rim Bank immediately.
  7. Do not send sensitive information over e-mail. Standard e-mail is not secure. Use the Message Center in Pacific Rim Bank Online, call us, or send us a fax if you need to communicate sensitive information to us.
